Default My first Harley...please edjumakate me

Hey all, I recently purchased a 2006 883L with 1600 miles on her with a nice list of mods:
1200 kit with reworked heads
S&S carb and intake
BUBS Jugs exhaust
Screaming Eagle ignition
Wideglide Front end conversion

First of all, the guy I bought the bike from had these mods done but didn't know much about them and never rode the bike.
I'm getting the carb rebuilt tomorrow although it runs good (leaks gas and after riding for a bit the idle jumps up)

I'm not a speed freak but I'm guessing this bike will be pretty quick???

Speedo is 10+ miles fast and I have a feeling it has to do with the 883-1200 gearing or the ignition but not sure?

Anyway, after 2 weeks, I'm totally in love with this bike. I test drove and sat on a number of bikes and this one just felt so perfect and i feel so comfortable, i just love it!!!!

But, I need to know more about what I've got
2006 compared to 2005 to 2007 etc.
883 with 1200 kit compared to stock 1200.
Is it possible to change gear ratios economically and how would I do it?
I read somewhere that the 1200 conversions burn oil???

Please, ANY info about my bike would be so helpful.
Thanks in Advance I'm looking forward to your responses

Jim

I'd love to do a 1200 or even a 1250 kit on my wifes sportster. Congrats on the new bike
I'm no expert but I think 04 thru 06 are same. 04 started rubber mounting motors. In 07, my wifes year, they went to fuel injection and I think carbs were no longer available. This is one of the main driving factors that we chose 07-no choke or warm up time, just start and go. That and the smoothness from the rubber mount motor. She was set on getting an 883, 1200 just sounded to intimidating for a fairly new rider. 1200 burning oil? I wouldn't think so.
I heard that the transmissions are the same on the 1200 as the 883 so the difference is, you could get a taller front pulley, one or two more teeth and use the stock belt, for smoother highway riding.
I'm sure you'll get some more answers from much more qualified people.
Wide glide front end conversion sounds cool. Pics?
I'm currently changing my wifes bike to a larger tank and FL front end. Link to build in sig if you'd like to check it out.

I have a 2006 1200 custom and I really like it, as I have owned many Harleys.
I put Mobile 1 V-Twin oil in it available at your Harley Shop.
Yes it's carbed, which I prefer, because there is no fuel pump, injectors, computer, sensors, just simple gravity feed, and a lot less to break down.
My advice is not to spend a ton more on mods, incase you want to trade up.
I put a windshield and leather bags on it and ride it.
People spend thousand on go fast mods...why?
Just buy a crotch rocket.
I would cruise my GSXR at 150mph, the Harley doesn't feel stable at over 100mph.
so it's fast enough.
I also installed a $14 Walmart volt meter so that I know the stator is charging.
They are a rock solid machine and a great value for the money.

Can't do a pic right now.
Did the same thing with the Gixer, ..went to Walmart, battery dept.
Small 2" x 1.5" meter with cig. plug wired to it.
Cut the cig plug off, used double sided tape and mounted it to the front
brake master cylinder reservoir on the handle bar.
Took the steering stem plate off to access the turn signal wiring.
Soldered the meter wires to the turn signal wires. (switched circuit)

Now when I turn on the ignition, I get a voltage read out.

The sporty has a battery light, but it only comes on when the battery is almost dead.
With the volt meter, you start getting low voltage, pull the headlight fuse, and head for home.
It will run for miles and miles without the headlight.

This is a really innovative idea! I might just do that because I had this low battery issue in the middle of a couple of rides last year and as you said, the battery light only came up when it was almost dead. Changed my headlight to LED one and have LED passing lamps sitting in the garage right now to conserve battery power on those long rides. Especially in winters my battery is severely taxed with headlight, passing lamps, USB phone charger and heated gear connected to it. So a low voltage indication early on is surely gonna be helpful.

Thanks for sharing the knowledge. Much appreciated.

OP - Sorry for hijacking your thread. Best wishes for acquiring a nice bike. Do post pics when you get a chance. This forum is a wealth of knowledge and I am sure you are gonna get some good responses.
