Default Dropped Bike in Ditch Now Wont Shift.

Hello, a buddy dropped his bike on the left side in a ditch the other day. There is almost no damage other than a few scrathes on the mirror. The bike is stuck in gear now and will not shift up or down. He brought me the bike today and I'm going to check it out over the next few days. I have read it may be a bent shifter shaft or a shifter fork. I'm just curious your thoughts ansd maybe you can point me what areas to check?

Bike is a 05 1200.

Thanks very much for the help!

Not good, ...if it's internal the crankcase halves have to be split to get at it.
Remove all external linkage and see if the shifter shaft works.

Man I hope not. I'm going to remove all the linkage and open up the primary today. Fingers crossed!

Take a look at the shaft, does it look bent in any way? I could have been pushed into the trans too. Either way it will be a pain to fix.

I'm not sure you have to split the case if just the shifter shaft is bent. I think it attaches outside on case half. The shifter drum and forks are inside the case halves since 2004 AFIK.

I started out re adjusting the clutch at the lever and inside the primary. The clutch being pulled in does not stop the wheel from turning when cranking the bike. The battery is dead so I have it charging now. Could the clutch plates be stuck? Also the primary had a small inspection cover in the center. I think it's a 05 model bike. He told me 06.

If the bike is cold, the clutch will drag, hence the wheels turning. The small cover is your primary chain inspection (and transmission filler) cover.

Those forward controls and linkage could be a source of the trouble as well.
