1978 Sportster quesiton
I have 2 questions. My father just recently rebuilt a kick start '78 Sportster and I am interested in getting him some needed supplies for the bike. Right now it's a kick start and I'd be interested in getting him a kit to upgrade to push start if one exists, would anyone know if one does and where I could find it and what exactly I'd need? I don't own a bike or know much about them. Secondly, the engine was rebuilt with the majority of it being painted black however the chrome covers are old and worn and peeling up (you can see the black underneath it in spots) so I was curious, do they sell new covers vs paying to have them re-chromed? I appreciate any help I can get, thanks!

No such kit that includes everything you need. I worry this is a big project since you state it is a kick only bike.
Do your sprocket cover and cam cover have the dent for a starter in them or are they the kick only type? If you can post a picture and we can tell you.
I would also wonder if your clutch basket has a ring gear on it or not. I don't remember if they were including them on all XL's at that time.
You'll need a battery capable for electric start and possibly need to redo the battery box/oil tank if you can't fit a good electric start battery in there. Run all the wiring and solenoid. Upgraded battery cables.
Possibly need to upgrade your regulator if it is the type for kick only batteries to keep your generator from burning out.
New covers pretty much don't exist, and if they do they are poor quality at best. Rechroming would be expensive, but possible. Talk to your local plater.
