Is the tach on a 1989 Sportster mechanical or electronic? If mechanical, I want to mount a tach on my 1989 and I picked up a tach from a 1991 1200.
Where is the engine mount for the cable?

 

It's electric, pretty sure it runs off the pink wires to the coil. Hard to follow my 1991 FSM wiring diagram, but pink to pink, I think. What color wires do you have from the 1991 tach?
