here's what i'm saying about the alignment marks being off.

it's either just ahead of the rear intake mark...

or just after. i played around with the pinion position, that just caused other issues with the front cam and aligning them. +1 tooth seem a little closer but it's now on the other side of the timing mark on the rear intake cam

since:
1. i don't know what i'm doing ,
2. there was something toasty and wrong previously when running ,
3. and 2 folks want the rear exhaust cam moved up a tooth ()X2

i moved it to the just after position. i'm 100 coachable and ok with trying.
that's why i'm going with adjustables, so's i can get in and out of there without tearing down the top end.

where's your feeler gauges?

for checking ring gap in the bore before installing on piston (probably just for informational purposes)

I see...

This happens quite a bit in the mechanical world. The key is to NOT blast through these occurrences without even being aware of them.

My process (and many others) in this case would be just as you have done to this point...

-"Hmm, something seems off here"

-"Well that seems better this other way" OR In your case: "Hmm, that's seems off also"...STOP

-I might think about the effects of that cam being slightly advanced or retarded (because that's what I do...can't help it...comes naturally )

-Now research...internet, other documents, etc. If credible info found, then proceed as fits

-If nothing really found one way or another (or in place of step above), Show, Call, Send photo to someone who has probably seen this before...lots of times. They probably will have an answer

But NO WAY would I proceed without coming to some resolution (that I accept)

.

Walmart?...I hope they have something... may have to go to one your Auto Parts stores.

Get one that uses .001" increments from .001"(.001/.0015) to at least .025" and a bonus if you can remove them to use individually.

Your FSM should have the procedure

don't think i'll need the "bastard file" or the nail file.

tappets were rock solid so i'm now pretty sure the rear exhaust push rod was a major part of the problem. not sure on wtf was happening in the front cylinder with all that black stuff and carbon. could have been from the oil on the air filter. no idea, going forward, i will have to keep an eye on that with the endoscope.

gaps where within spec on what became the rear cylinder

and i have, unfortunately, learned a new lesson... check your shipments thoroughly... one pack of rings was fine, the other looked like cookie monster got to them. wtf? will have to call surdyke on monday to handle that and see the local dealer can source the rings from a nearby warehouse. i'm 99% sure there are none of those at the dealer.

i can really only be mad at myself for not checking earlier to catch it... i'm hoping they just got broken while shipping and didn't leave surdkye that way.

after going postal and curb stomping the stray cat that hangs around my house (i didn't do anything to that cat, and there is no curb for 5 miles), i looked at the rings that came with cylinder to see if i could use those instead. a no go, those stock rings are visibly weaker, thinner, and wimpy looking in comparison to the high compression ones. so much for getting this all done today. life goes on.

i moved on to stuff i could knock out today. the swing arm situation will wait until the bike is back in one piece with verification of self-induced problems being fixed.

i replaced the gnarled engine temp sensor with a new one because gnarles barley

gnarles barley
