Default Coil/ignition relocation & tank lift.

Hey...

I'm hoping someone can shed some light on some of the concerns I have before placing an order.

The bike is a 2002 Sportster 1200 Custom.

The coil is pretty straight forward, I'm not sweating that. The key is also not a big deal. All of that I get.

What I'm a little worried about is the tank lift. I'm concerned about clearance. I have the speedometer in the factory location, see pic below which will not allow the tank to go much higher. Not really a problem because a pair of spacers and two longer bolts will give me the clearance I need.

What I'm worried about is the clearance on the bars.

I know DK Customs talks about their Deluxe Tank kit which should help with the pre '04 models having clearance issues but I'm not really understanding how or what it's supposed to do.

Any help would be much appreciated as I'd like to order everything at once.

I have the Deluxe 2 1/2" kit from DK installed on my 2000. The kit lifts the front and the rear up and back just enough so your bars will not hit your tank. I have about 1/4" clearance between the tank and

bars.

Yes, pretty simple. The tank won't tilt upward enough for that lift, so DK will send you 2 small tabs that bolt onto the original bolt on the rear of the tank. It'll only raise it about 3/8 of an inch or so. If you moved your coil and ignition already, the lift is the simplest of the three.

There is enough wire to relocate to the traditional spot by the upper engine mount.

For the horn, they sell a bracket on their website for like $6 and change that moves it up between the downtubes.

I'm still concerned about clearance though, at this point I have just under an inch between the bars and tank at full lock on either side.

Their smallest kit is a 1.5" lift. If I get the deluxe kit which is supposed to move the tank back a bit and give more clearance, I am wondering if that will work.

Anyone? Bueller?

Default 1200 clamp and riser

Not to spend your money but, after a couple different looks, I went with 3 1/2 risers, used 48 gauge upper clamp assy, and then 2 1/2 lift. Looks like the pic.

Thanks for that...

I like the look up front but I don't want to change bars...at least not yet. Damn, really not sure which way to go now. I guess I can always do the coil now and whatever else later as I decide to change looks.

Quick question on the key relocate;

Can I use the smaller bracket they give you but keep the key in the factory spot using the bracket?

I ask because I actually prefer the location of it to the usual relocation down by the battery. I also don't want my keys banging against the case. I commute on the thing so I have more than one key on my ring. I'd like to keep the ignition in the same location but without using the stock bracket which will be empty not after moving the coil. I basically don't want it hanging down cluttering up the space. I hope that makes sense.

Default Keys

I had thought putting it in the solo bag. There is a lot of wire with the switch. Just make a quick disconnect cannon plug.
