New Handlebars
I have a 05 sportster 1200 custom with stock handle bars. I'm 6' and would like to change them out for something a little higher. I like the short ape hangers on the new Street Bob's. Would these work on my bike, ordoes anyone have any other suggestions? Iv'e thought about the 3" or4" risers also. Would I have to buy longer cables also?

I have an 05 883xl, I put 8 inch rise buckhorns on, and I had to change everything. You may be alright if you are only gonna go with a 3 to 4 inch rise, possibly just a wiring extension kit, which you can get all plug in so you don't have to solder anything. Just to give you an example with what I had to get for mine. For the clutch, throttle and idle I used +6 length, and for the front break I used + 4. I also got the 6 inch wiring extension harness. Perhaps someone who has actually only done the risers can give you a better idea on if you need the longer cables.Good luck.

RE: New Handlebars
I have a 06 1200C and the stock bars were to narrow for me, 28 1/2" so i got a set of supr. gld.bars HD #56004-00, they are 33" wide but are the same rise & pullback, with a little work the only thing i had to replace was the throt cables, got 32"barrett ones at j&p 15.00 each. I alsocarefully cut the boss off the frt. brake line at the resovior and move the line out a little, also i undid the upper clamp on the line and bent the line up just a bit. took a little figuring but the end result is a stock look but more comfort, i also am 6 ft.

I had the same problem as you, SDB. Bought a set of bars off an eBay vendor who listed them as "chrome 6-inch apes for Harley" after seeing them on one of the forum member's bike. Well, the cable indents were positioned too far back to have the cables clear the clutch/brake clamps, but that was no big deal. Hogged out the indents and ran the cables inside the bars.
The clutch and throttle cables can be stretched out (really stretched) to reach and the way the front brake line is built didn't do the stretch very well. So it's a new set of cables/hose and went with the woven steel jackets.
You do have to remove the fuel tank to extend the wiring harnesses. I thought the wiring extension kits were a little pricey and did the solder/heatshrink job on them -- all 24 connections. Not fun! Buy the extension kits; wished I had!
But what a difference that little extra rise and pullback made. I certainly wouldn't want it higher. Just remember that you're '05already has a six-inch rise to start with; going to a ten-inch bar may make you feel like you're a hanging ape.
Was it worth it? You bet. I'll post some photos first chance.
