Do what you want. If you are considering a 15. Why not a 14 or 13... or even a 12. The 16 is the most radical departure from the rest (most new goodies). I like it, A LOT. Fact is you'll get the 16 and monkey it up with mods so lean towards the 15 or earlier.
I have no kids (allergic), 4 years on you, draw 6 figures, couple rides, own two houses & a condo (headache). I still wouldn't do what you are trying to do. I'm allergic to new and depreciation and very much aware of future value of money. Im scrooge. TEHO.

When I went to the dealer to look at the 16, the salesmen said they have a customer who got a 15 a few months ago, rode it a few times and parked it. He wants a bigger bike, but doesn't want to trade in the 48 because of the money loss, so hes passively trying to sell it. So the salesmen mentioned that if the 2016 was out of my budget, he'd call this guy up, and they'd just transfer the note to my name.
Here recently a few 13s and 14s have popped up for sale, but they're all several hundred miles from me, and like I said, I just recently got my helmet and boots, and I'm taking my riders course tomorrow.

with the 16 you'd have your choice of the current colors and such. at the same price. new everything. if you want to do new, go all in. get the HFSM and other options like a daymaker worked into the price, pull their pants down.
driving far for a deal is ok. i just did it and i did it with my sporty.

i marched into my local dealer and demanded a 15 or 16 wide glide with dual disks and all i wanted via the build your bike program and they were like, "nope, can't do it" i cried like a girl and fussed with them basically calling the build your bike/factory customization a bunch of bulls***. settled down and test drove the wg, lr, and fb. only like the wg. was ready to buy and then the flames on the tank had to go... was told there were none in the area without willie flames... left. came to the forum. drove 200 miles and got my vivid black 2013 and saved $6k. that will cover the dual disk upgrade and more.

yeah man, check cl, cycletrader, ebay... going to get your bike could be your first adventure. just have the toy PPI'd and initial serviced by the local dealer before riding home.

I would maybe pay that much for that bike with the damage on it to fix up, but I wouldn't pay 1/2 that for one with a salvage title!

that bike needs a new derby, turn signals all around, clutch pedal, and more. not to mention the gremlins that may be lurking... salvage headache too. maybe a grand total.
and op. harley will handle private party finance too. your local credit union will probably give you the best deal though 1.99 or somewhere in that range.

Smoked lenses
flush mount gas cap
Sundowner 2 up seat
Quick disconnect sissy bar with back pad
Hard shell luggage that snaps onto sissy bar (still has the tags)
Tank bag
Other misc goodies
1504 miles.
brought it home for $8k
It was bought and decked out at Harley in 2012, ridden for a year and parked. Since then hes just gone out to the garage and cranked it now and then. Been on a trickle charger. It fired right up and rode around fine, ill still probably drain the gas tank and refill it, as well as an oil change.
Tires are in great shape, one little superficial scratch on the oil tank.
I'm really surprised with how well it starts. Total cold start, as fast as I can tap the starter, its on. not even a push, just tap the button.
Did a rider to rider transfer at the dealership, they gave it a once over and had no complaints, not a super thorough inspection though.
My biggest fear is the same as what I've had with low mileage vehicles, they suddenly start seeing regular use and gremlins come out, dried up head gaskets, corroded injectors, etc.
