Default 04- up Ignition timing

I am thinking that there is no timing adjustment on my 2005 Sportster.

What would make it run like the timing is off, is there a way to check ? I don't have the timing hole like earlier model Sportster so what is the deal? Is it module controlled?

on 2004-2006 models there is no way to adjust the timing if it has the stock ignition module. It is pre-set from the factory. But you can get a new ignition module from companies like Dyna and twin tech that will allow you to change the timing.

If your bike has been converted from an 883 to a 1200 it is mandatory IMO to get a new ignition module otherwise you will have detonation issues which can damage the engine.

What are your symptoms? The crank position sensor (CKP) is a common culprit for issues that seem to be with ignition/carb.

I have already replaced the crank sensor. Symptoms are intermittent carb fart/ popping, sometimes the idle is "rough" and lack of power (it is an 883 but it seemed to have more power before) It takes a lot to get 60-70 MPH out of it. It just seems like the timing is a little off for lack of a better description. maybe carb work is in order.

That's where I would start. At 10yo, it's due for a rebuild if it hasn't been done. Rebuild kits run ~$20 at CV Performance.
Also at 10 years, is the likely possibility of intake manifold seal leaks, both at the cylinder heads and the manifold to carb connection.
