Default Baffels Removed vs Drag Pipes

Well, installed the drags today. This is my observation.

Drag pipes have a more crackle tone. My pipes came with glass packed baffles. The baffleless stock pipes produce a much lower booming tone at idle. At speeds, the stock pipes sound great at throttle, but sound like a 350 Honda at low throttle. The drags seem to have less backfire riding the bike. I didn't notice any horsepower changes. The drags with the baffles weren't as loud as the stock baffless pipes. However, the drag pipes produced a more refined tone going through the gears.

Now. My buddie started my bike up with the baffles removed and I was inside the store. It shook the building and I decided they were too damn loud without them. I like loud pipes, but they would **** of my neighbors bigtime!!!

Did you install a full drag pipe exhaust, or just the mufflers?

If you install the full system the tone will depend quite a bit on if the the pipesare the same diameter from the exhaust port all the way back, of if they are 'stepped' construction.

If you just installed different mufflers the difference in tone would just be dependent on the muffler baffles/packing, as the rest of the system wouldn't have changed any.

On my WideGlide I tried a number of drag pipes, and finally settled on double walled Hooker pipes that are 'stepped tuned'.

The inner pipe is ceramic coated and the diameter changes from the exhaust port to about the middle of the system.

Here is a picture of the Hooker stepped tuned pipes, and a little audio/video file. ('96 FXDWG with a modified EVO).

Just the slip-ons. I like the tone.

Just the slip-ons. I like the tone.
They will probably get somewhat louder over time once the fiberglass packing 'settles in'..

Some people repack the fiberglass in the baffles every so often to reduce the tone, others prefer the additional tone they get.

I'll post better pics next week. My next project is replacing the pegs and hand grips. After that the front fork to a 40 degree rake.
