Default Should I replace exhaust gaskets? And which type?

Hi peeps, I've just removed my exhausts as I had a problem with the baffles. I have stock header pipes and slip ons. My bike is a 2012 with 5000 miles and the exhausts at the manifold end have been undone a few times and now pipes completely removed. My question is I have purchased new crossover pipe gaskets but should I fit new exhaust port gaskets and if so the tapered type or the flat SE type?? Cheers

Yes! Replace. As far as which ones, depends on your system. If all stock, probably the mesh ones. With my V&H pipes, only the SE ones work correctly. Either should work for you.... just make sure and use an inch/pounds torque wrench, and follow procedure in FSM. Most need 120 inch pounds for final torque. Over torquing causes most problems.

I asked the my contact at the dealership and he said replacement is recommended anytime you remove your exhaust. He did indicate a lot of people reuse them with no problems but it may lead to an exhaust leak. I plan to remove my exhaust and replace all of the gaskets.

I don't change them every time and I take mine on and off a lot getting at parts to remove or installing something. No leaks. Yes I am sure Harley recommends replacing them every time $$$$

I always buy them, but don't always replace. Keep extra gaskets in the toolbox. Just my two cents worth.

I just bought exhaust port and interconnect gaskets. The parts guy highly recommended the SE port gaskets since he said it is MUCH easier to install than the OEM gaskets. Here is a pic of the gaskets Part #17048-98.

I have stock head pipes on my 2011 XL1200L....not sure if it would fit your bike.

Cheers for replays, I've just bought some from local dealer. Decided to go with the stock type and gonna try putting them in the freezer before fitting👍🏻
