Default Knobby Tires for Street Use?

I've ridden dual purpose tires with good street traction. Full knobbies are a different matter; besides less traction on pavement they vibrate the bike. Some have ***** with overlapping spacing so there's always a flat on the ground for less vibration on pavement. There's no performance gain on pavement and their traction goes down as the ***** wear.

I used to use dual sport tires because with only one bike it was my off roader, too (made a big difference off road on a street bike), but now with several bikes I can match the bike to the ride - when the old things are running.

Exclamation

I rode trail bikes with scrambler tyres for several years, mostly on the tarmac and they were fine, however they did drift in the corners at speed. I know plenty of owners of the current dual sport things and wouldn't give a thanks for even sitting on one! I don't see the point of those bikes, nor of using that style of tyre on a 'proper' road bike!

We have a member who talked a while ago of building a Sporty-based offroad bike, for which off-road tyres would obviously be just right, but not for a dedicated road bike. There is plenty of tyre choice available for us.

Sportster suspension barely handles smooth road let alone off road. With that i do like those BMW's roll like a couch on the interstate and great in the mud.

Damn, I'm guessing I'd get around that too. I do a lot of commuting with my bike and whenever I go out I got the woman with me.

Thank you all for the responses- I've seen those Cokers on some of the bikes, but didn't know what brand they were. I just wasn't sure about some of those Lego-block tires I was running across. As most of you pointed out, looks =/= safety!
