I have the dipstick/gauge. My normal temps run around 180-200 but I've hit 260 sitting in traffic in the dead of summer. I also use syn oil which runs 15-20 degrees cooler. Since most heat problems occur when sitting in traffic I don't think an oil cooler is of much use since you need air flow for the cooler to do its thing. The only advantage I see in a cooler would be the added oil capacity. Just my .02

I just bought one this past weekend... It usually reads about 190-200 when I'm cruising down the road. I haven't had any time sitting in traffic. A friend of mine (from Ft. Lauderdale area) says that we don't have "Rush Hour", we have "Rush Minute"... And she's right.

But, I am VERY INTERESTED in finding out if anyone else has been getting different readings.

I am running regular dino oil, 10W40.

My temp stays pretty much at 170 all the time.I use H.D.20/50 regular oil. My bike has an oil cooler and I use extra capacity oil filters.

I have the temp guage, with syn oil and when the temps are above 70, it usually runs around 180. I got the temp guage in the winter, so we'll see how she does this summer when it gets hot around here.

Although, I did ride for about 160 miles day before yesterday, temps around 88 and the oil temp was around 185, but that was not hard riding at all, and NO traffic. All just cruising through the countryside at a fairly slow speed. (50 - 60mph).

I usually see mine anywhere between 180-200. I use Mobil V-Twin synthetic oil and the regular oil filter, no cooler.

Mine was around 225-240 last summer using Mobil 1 V Twin 20w50 synth. I don't know how Sporty Pig kept at 185 degrees after a 160 mile ride.

I'm usually around 180-200 if I keep her moving, otherwise it can get to 220 in stop and go. It's SoCal weather. I'm using HD 20W50 but will be switching to Amsoil with summer approaching.

Ok now that I think about it I would usually check the temp after getting home and being in a little stop and go traffic. Maybe it wasn't as high as I thought. I'll have to check it this summer.

Cool info! I'd love to hear if anyone has ever overheated their bike (or got close to it) and noticed what their temp was. A buddy of mine (who rides a Heritage Classic Softail) was giving me grief because he thought this gauge was 'stupid'.

He said, "It don't mean ANYTHING unless it has a red arc to tell you when its to the overheating point."

So, if anyone has any info, I'll rub it in his face. But I think my gauge isn't a dumb thing at all.
