2001 1200 sportster. The past few days my engine has been turning off suddenly while riding it. It Has been happening after 10 to 14 miles. The engine will still turn over but it wont fire back on for a few minutes.. Anyone know what would cause this? At first I thought it was the extreme heat, but it also happened this morning at 4 am when it was cool.
You need fuel, spark, air and compression to run. Start checking those things to narrow it down. More the likely you have compression. So start with spark and fuel.
Since it's a 2001, how old are the spark plug wires? One could be going bad. Just happened to my 09 Ultra with about 40K on it. Wouldn't hurt to remove each and test with an ohm meter to factory spec. I'd check the ground to battery and ground to frame too.
Good luck.
could be a bad crank position sensor that's what it was on my 99 road king when your bike shuts down check to see if your getting any spark mine wasn't that's how I new it wasn't fuel replaced sensor no problems for years now very commen problem good luck.
