Default Primary Oil Change

When I changed my primary oil I didn't quite get a full quart of oil out, maybe 4 ounces short. I dumped a whole quart back in. No I didn't undo the primary cover. I re-filled it thru the primary chain cover window. Will it be okay if it's just a little over full.

Perfectly OK, I just put a quart in mine each time and don't worry about it.

Your clutch may drag a bit, especially cold. I'd recommend taking the derby cover off next time, so you can fill by level rather than volume.

So far it's okay. But sense I have the gasket for the primary cover, I just night do that in a day or two here. After it cools down and less humid. Hate doing anything in this heat.

Default Primary Oil Change

I always just pour 1 quart in through the primary inspection hole. Never had a problem.

Thanks for that response. I may just go by the feel of it. So far shifts just fine, even better with Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W50. Now to get the engine changed over to that.

I use to just pour one quart through the chain inspection cover like you. Never had any problems.

Side note, the sportster was the easiest bike I ever owned for fluid changes.

You'll be fine, I just dump 1 quart through the chain inspection cover as well, been doing that for over 100,000 miles without an issue.
I do however recommend not just draining the primary/tranny with the bike resting on the jiffy stand. When it looks like it's drained, stand the bike upright and hold it there for a bit, even lean it to the right, and you'll get more out of the drain.

Yep, Had my oldest daughter do just that while I was laying on the floor just to see if more would come out, it did. Going to do that same for the engine oil too.
