1000 mile service
just got my 1K service done today on my 05 883. Wow, cost me $301. I will now learn how to do it myself. I've change the oil myself for winter storage and it cost me pennies compare to what the dealer charges. Is it worth it to take to them for service? Do they do anything that i cannot do in my garage?

RE: 1000 mile service
If you got a manual, can read and comprehend what you read, they have not much of anything they can offer you for the money they charge. I will not say you or I can do it all, but there aint much I haven't been able to do. Working nowon a set up to check rim Runout and true.

RE: 1000 mile service
Service manual, complete set of tools and a motorcycle jack helps. My bike hasn't been to the dealer, except for some warranty issues, since the 1,000 mile service. Now has over 16,000.
That even includes getting a new set of tires. I ordered the tires online, and FINALLY found a guy that would mount and balance them for me. I took the wheels off the bike, drove to his place, he mounted and balanced them, and I was back home in an hour. Charged me $30 for the set. Got the Metzeler tires for $205 including shipping. So, new set of tires installed$235, plus 2 - 3 hours of my time. I waited until the weather forecast was rain solid for 2 days. I wasn't going to be riding on those days anyway. Try pricing a set of tires at the stealer, and don't forget they are going to add sales tax on whatever price they quote you. In some places (like TN) that can be a significant $$$
I'm going to be replacing front and rear brake pads in a week or so (I discovered just how worn they were when I took the wheels off for new tires). Just for snickers, I called the stealer to get a price quote on replacing front and rear pads. I was told around $350, and I'd have to leave the bike with them probably for a week.
I can get the pads online for $55 including shipping. And do the service when it best fits my agenda, not the stealers agenda.
