Default new noise from, I think the top end..

97 1200c, 10,500 mi......longer than normal to warm up, farts a couple of times. plugs look good. sounds rougher than normal. 30mph in second, sounds like loose rockers hitting the cover....on deceleration, am getting a popping from I think the rear cylinder.....steer me in the correct direction, please....Im an old guy that mostly does the speed limit around town......does the timing get out of whack on occasion?

Sounds similar to an issue i just had. I kept running it as i was on my way home from a long weekend trip. ended up running the head bolt thru the rocker box cracked the head and cylinder. Hopefully yours isnt this serious but should check it out before it gets worse like mine did.

Pull your spark plugs. See how they look. Check for intake leaks. Use carb cleaner while the bike is running. Spray around the intake. If there's a change in idle you have a leak.

Those are starts

Sorry. Just reread and noticed you already pulled your plugs. Try the intake thing.

Is it farting through the carb or out the exhaust.

sounds like an intake/ carb seal issue... easy fix.. a couple of seals and a gasket and off you go... I find when installing the gaskets for the intake and carb that a nice coat of grease on them makes everything go together smoother...also while you have the carb off you might want to give it a good spray inside with CRC powerlube, that stuff melts away crud without drying out the seals etc. and leaves a nice coat of lube on everything (put rags down first and give the whole throat area a good flood of the stuff letting it wash all the crap out onto the rags) then spray the whole outside to wash off the dirt and lube up the shafts etc.. Some folks use carb cleaner for the above, I don't like the stuff as it leaves everything dry afterwards and is really hard on plastic/ rubber etc....BUT carb cleaner is good if you are rebuilding the carb and replacing the plastic bits etc.
