Me and the wife went riding with a couple of friends yesterday. We're heading back into town on I-40 going about 70. The head wind was ridiculously strong. I'm bringing up the rear and notice something black bouncing on the road. I look up and see the girl 2 bikes up feeling her head looking for her helmet. Well my wife dodges it and then so do I. I hit the brakes as fast as I can and pull off in the median which isn't very wide. I hop off the bike and run back to get it. Luckly it ended up next to the concret wall in the median. I picked it up and looked at it and it had no damage besides a couple small scratches. I really figured a car would've hit it. And it's only one on those skull caps, not DOT. Very thankful nobody got hurt.
DOT or not, that helmet has sustained a major impact and should be replaced. Just because you cant see any visible damage besides a couple scratches doesnt mean the helmet is safe to wear.
our teacher in the motorcycle course told us even if you sit your helmet down on your seat and it falls off onto concrete or something hard you should replace it. I wouldnt go that far, but i would replace it for sure if it bounced down the highway for a while. Thats some major impacts. The foam inside is only good for one impact. Once it gets compressed you mine as well be wearing nothing.
Fill it full of silicone, put it on the girls head, THAT will "reseal" any problems the helmet might have sustained on impact [just kidding] glad no one was hurt.
Now that yall mention it, I have heard that before. I'll tell her but I really doubt she'll replace it. She's one of the many that wouldn't wear one if it wasn't the law.
If she was worried about how well it worked she would have bought a DOT one in the first place. Just wear it like it is. Just don't expect it to protect anything.
If that is all the better she had it tethered onto her head, why even bother wearing one. Seems to me it would fall off before her head has a chance to hit the Buick bumper...[&o]
