Default 12" apes on 72

I'm planning on installing a set of narrow bottom 12" apes on my 72. Of course it came stock with 10" "mini apes" on 2" risers. Anyone know if the stock cables & wires will work with the 12" apes on 1" risers? The net difference is +1" so I tend to think the stock cables may work but I'm wondering if anyone here has tried this route.

Yes it can be done. I put 2" taller risers on my 72 without swapping cables. I had to move the rubber protector near the triple tree mount area on the brake cable to get extra length but there's plenty of slack in the brake line. I used an exacto knife to slit the rubber protector at the spot the factory melts it together pulled it off the brake line and slid the line up. I used glue to keep the protector in it's new spot on the cable. There was just enough slack in the clutch cable to not have to make any changes to it. When I swap to steel braided lines in the future I'll get a 2" longer clutch cable For the throttle and idle cables I gently straightened them out at the factory 90* bend by the throttle handle to get just enough slack.

Hey Rob Robb

I'm thinking of doing the same thing. How much of a difference did the swap make in riding comfort and control? Also, you have a pict of your ride so I can see the difference? Thanks!

For me it made a world of difference because I've got carpul tunnel syndrome in both hands and bone spurs in both shoulders, besides an old neck and back injuries. By raising the bars my arms are now straight outstretched so I don't get the pain and numbness in my wrist and hands and I don't get the sharp pains in my shoulders because my arms are past the point where I experience the pain. Much cheaper fix than having several surgeries. As far as handling I didn't notice any big change in handling ( a little difference at slow speed u turns in parking lots but not a problem ) I just took 2 close ups showing the risers & fix to brake line rubber grommet and straightening the throttle & idle lines. These are the only changes I had to make to any lines. Hope this helps you.

Not meaning to hijack, but I put 14" on mine and I too feel the ride is much better. I am 5'9 and with 14"s my arms are just barely above horizontal. Nearly all fatigue is gone, and I think with some better grips most would be gone. It takes a little getting used to, maybe one full day of riding. Good luck, I'm sure you'll like 'em.
