California Canister and my fuel system.

California Canister and my fuel system.
I was cleaning out from under my recently purchased '96 XLH-1200 today, and noticed that one of the hose fittings is broken off that canister that's mounted in front of the rear tire.
It has three lines:
#1...goes to carb, it's broken.
#2...goes to tank (with an in-line vapor valve)
#3...goes to air cleaner (filtered-air side).
Whoever installed the Stage 1 air cleaner tossed the #3 line, so the canister draws dirty air, and the canister is busted and is probably not cheap.
So what would it hurt if I:
(1)...Tossed the canister
(2)...Put a tiny filter on the end of the hose from the tank/vapor valve so the tank would still be vented and not leak fuel if the bike fell over.
(3)...Plugged the line that goes to the carburetor to keep the carburetor from sucking vacuum?
