Default good used 1200 price?

I'm looking to purchase my first Harley after years of saying I want one and never having the money - until now. I started looking locally at a few dealerships and in the newspaper when my wife mentioned my search to a family friend who happed to be selling a '99 1200 Custom Sportster. He purchased the bike new and lost interest in it after his health started to decline - he is asking $7500 for it. Does this sound like a good deal given the milage, accessories and age? Here is the spec sheet:
[ul][*]2,757 Actual miles[/b][*]Screamin’ Eagle Pipes[/b][*]Custom button tuft seat[/b][*] Sissy bar with padded back rest[/b][/b][*]Luggage rack[/b][/b][*]Custom chrome & O ring pegs[/b][*][/b]Ride To Live/Live To Ride chrome & brass eagle covers on derby, breather & gas tank[/b][*]Quick on/off windshield[/b][/b][*]Leather saddle bags[/b][/b][*]All stock covers & rubber pegs[/b][/b][*]Will include 2 helmets & large expandable T-bag[/b][/b][/ul]

Sounds high to me. You could probably pick up a rubber mount (2004+) 1200 for that price if you look around. Remember, the bike will be 9 years old in August when Harley unveils the 2008 line in August of this year. I really think you can do better, just my $0.02...

check out http://www.craigslist.com. pick the cities within driving distance that you'd be willing to get a bike from, and start shopping... if nothing else, it will give you ballpark pricing. I would not bother looking at bikes without pics... it makes all the difference. Do a search on "Harley" and select to see only ones with pics. (otherwise, you can do a search on "Sportster", or "Sporty", but you won't get them all in one chunk like you will searching "harley".) You can even select a price range to search. and its FREE!

I paid $4k for this 1996, with 15k miles, with about $750 of additional accessories for it he never installed, or took off when he bought it and replace with stuff he liked better... I had to drive 4 hours to get it.

I checked every state surrounding mine. Ebay will show you the HIGH END of the pricing spectrum (along with the Dealer showrooms... YIKES!) and the want ads will show you reality. Most everyone else was willing to negotiate, so their prices were high.

See what you can find. There are occasionally deals out there (like mine.)..

Good luck!

p.s. My bike is an XL1200... Looks brand new.

Very high. Use this to negotiate the price down. April 06 I bought a used 05 (1 year old) 1200 C with 1400 miles on it. $8,000.00. It had front axle covers, rider and passenger pegs and Harley Davidson quick detach windshield with leather accessory bag attached.

I should also add that it was in perfect condition and still is.

Good luck in your search

I have noticed that the prices vary a great deal from region to region in the country. I am in the Central US and 6 months ago purchased a 2005 1200 Custom--with taxes paid (SE A/C. SEII Pipes, Thunderslide carb kit, an upgraded seat and padded sissy bar-- for $8,000. It had 6,000 miles on it at the time.

Even with low miles, the bike you reference is, I think, old for the price. Has it been ridden recently, or has it sat for a time? How was it stored? Could be looking at potential fuel and electrical system problems if not properly prepped and stored. Low mileage is not ncessarily the same as well maintained.

On the other hand, some of the accessory items you list are relatively expensive to add: Pipes, Leather Saddlebags, T-Bag, Quick release windshield, seat, luggage rack.If you check the pricing on those items, new prices would run $1500 to $2000, minimum, if they are Harley branded. Couple of helmets, if they fit, another $100 to $200. I would check to see if the A/C and carb have also been upgraded--I suspect it may be so since that often accompanies a pipes upgrade. Another way to look at it is that you are getting the base bike for $5,500, with lots of add-ons.

Check the market in your area--dealers websites usually have used bikes listed, and you can also check used bikes from the Harley company website. In our area, these were competitive with or less than adds I saw for private sales. A lot of the private sales people remember when you couldn't get a Harley for 6 months, and it was a real sellers market. That is no longer the case--which the deallers know, and as a result, their used pricing was actually better in most cases.

i got my 2001 1200 conversion for 5,000.00 it had forward controls, new tires, new mustang seat, progressive shocks, vance and hines pipes, came with leather saddle bags, cover, ect. Great bike, man that is waaay too much. You should be able to pick that up for around 4,500-5 grand.

Hmmmm.....seems a little on the high side to me. I just bought a 1998 sporster custom 1200cc for 5000. it has 20K miles on it, everything chrome windshield, saddle bags, custom seat, sissy bar, forward controls, new tires, screamin eagle pipes, looks really damn sweet. I think it was a pretty good deal.
