Police Sportster

RE: Police Sportster
The 883's are nice bikes, but I don't understand the logic behind comments that compare them to the 'original Sportster' in a historic fashion.
(And yes, I was around and riding back in the 60's and 70's)..
At a risk of being flamed (which doesn't bother me in the least), in my opinion a current day modern 883 Sportster is as much like a 60's Sportster as a current day modern Hemi Charger is to one made in the late 60's.
As I've mentioned before, the older Sportsters were a different animal than the 883's of today. Let's see; you couldn't even get an electric start option until 1967, they only went to left side shifting in 1975 when the Fed's mandated right side rear braking, theyused completely different iron head engines until 1986, they were 4-speed until 1991, and you could go on and on....
The current EVO 1200 and 883 Sportsters are great bikes, butneither a 883 EVO Sportster, or 1200 EVO Sportster, are anything like the original 900/1000 Iron Head Sportsters.
A 883 EVO engine might be close to the same displacement as the 900/1000 Iron Head engines used in the original Sportsters, but that is about all theyhave in common. Just like the 1200 EVO engine and the 1200 Shovelhead engines. Same displacement, but that's about all they have in common.
