I"m in the process of cutting up stock footballs. Off the shelf, I'd buy the S&S stealth with the hood pins holding it on. Unless you're frequently in pouring rain, you can get a pre filter and leave it on there. I like this one: (not mine)

I'm using the Arlen Ness Durby Sucker with a Durby cover, I've ridden through quite a bit of rain here in Belgium without a sock and I have had no issues.

DK Customs Outlaw HiFlow 425. It's here in my avatar. I opted for the external breathers too so the cool air gets into the engine. You'll get some blow by too since the oil mist isn't going into the air cleaner. Kevin, any comments on the "sportster oil blow by phenomenon?"

Oh, my air cleaner.... I'm a climber and have made it up Rainier a few times so I drilled out the bench mark to replace the skull I got from DK. And a clean, pink K&N is a great looking thing on your bike!

Very good looking customization of the 587

Oil blow by, or as HD calls it Oil Carryover, is pretty simple most of the time. The following thread outlines the most common causes, and easy things to do to eliminate it. It also has the less common, and more difficult issues to deal with.

Most every bike can vent externally and have no misting or oil drips.
