Default Key replacement or Duplicate for Gas Tank Cap??

Hi everyone, new around here... long time rider, new to harleys.

Quick question, my friend "gift" me a almost brand new Harley Gas Cap

"Harley Davidson Locking Gas Cap 62803-97A"
http://www.harley-davidson.com/store...cking-fuel-cap

The catch is that it only have one key, I'm wodering if I can get a replacement key from somewhere (there is an umber on the key 9967) or if maybe i can get a duplicate of the key a I have.

I'm nervous that if i lose the key I would get stuck with a locked GAs tank, I know those things are easy to hack open but it is more than an inconvenient.

Anyone knows?

Thanks

Have you tried the Parts department at your local dealer?

I have this same cap and was able to get a locksmith to make me a copy. Took him a few tries but it works well.

I would think any good locksmith could duplicate your key.

Any master locksmith should be able to cut the key by hand if needed. Of course it'll take extra time and cost a bit more depending on the cut but it's certainly doable. Search your area for locksmiths that work out of little parking lot kiosks; they usually do GREAT work for CHEAP. I had two duplicate ILCO ignition keys made for $11 at a local spot and it took 5 minutes. Generally gas cap keys are a small generic key that you could order on eBay and sometimes locksmiths will already have them in-stock.

Good luck, and whatever you do, do not procrastinate on having spare keys made. I always try to have at least three copies of every important key; one on me, one in the kitchen on the key hook, and one in my gun safe.
