Here's another question...

HD wants to charge me $180 to mount/balance my new tires... anyone install their own tires? The service manual shows a guy doing it. Is it worth it, or just avoid the headache and fork out the cash?

Hey man - They have your size in the 230 tour master series.

SUPER EASY to do it yourself. I did, carried the rim and tire into the dealer, <$45 for them to mount and balance.

Loosen the adjuster screws, remove the brake caliper, remove the axle nut, slide out the axle, slide tire forward, remove the belt, the tire will drop right out. Reverse the process when installing. I had mine on a block so it was level, etc.

What kind of block did you use to keep it level with no tires?

I have a 777 up front and no complaints so far. It's single compound so it's very sticky but won't last as long as a more expensive tire. In back I run a D402 because they ordered the wrong size rear 777 so I got a free upgrade.

Only the rear tire was removed. The front tire I left alone. I made my own block out of 2x4's. I used a lift for the back end and rested the frame on my diy wood block. Works for me, and it's dirt cheap.

sorry, my statement was a bit vague. i was referencing motorcycle superstore.
motorcycle superstore has the front tire i need, but they were sold out of the size in the 230 series i needed for the rear.
i was planning to buy a 230 series front tire, its only $56 on motorcycle superstore

I put a set of whitewall 777's on my 1200.

I removed wheels and took to dealer, $90 to mount/balance.

I did not loosen the adjusters when I pulled the rear axle.....just remove nut, tap it out with a wood mallet. To put back just line up and tap back in with same wooden mallet. No need to mess with the adjusters. That belt does have a little give to it.

Be careful with the front wheel....I had one shoe drop out of the caliper and could not get the sucker back in until I tore the caliper apart! *!&%!!!!!

OK - so before I bite the bullet - I can get the Shinko sizes I need in:

The 712s, the 777s, and the 230s... Has anyone used two or all three that would recommend a specific series? Please explain why you chose one over the others.
