My '05 goes of the standard 2 yr warranty this August but I am thinking about buying the extended at that time. Considering I am going to keep my bike for another few years, I think it would be worth it. Keep in mind, you dont have to buy the extended at the time of purchase. For a few bucks more, you can get it just prior to the base warranty expiring....

I didn't buy the warranty because the salesman at my stealer told me my sporty would NEVER break down!! He'd never lie to me, would he??? [sm=laughingsmilie.gif]

I bought the extended because I didn't want to get caught with an unknown expense. I hope to keep my bike for some years and run it into the ground! I'm setting it up for Touring now and hope to put some miles on it this summer.

You'll probably get many different answers to this question and still be left with not knowing for sure...

But not matter... in the end... I doubt you will ever get out of the shop without some type of out-of-pocket expense...

Its insurance on break downs is what it boils down to...

How good the insurance is directly affects what you pay at point of service...

I would read real well the limits and liabilities of the coverage not what the sales person/manager tells you...

There may be deductibles, does it cover diagnostics (how much) and is it just power train or fender to fender...

In the end... the provider decides if it's covered or not... and they always ask questions like, was it the original complaint... what that translates to is, they are not paying any more than what is absolutely necessary to get the bike going again...

A lot of things to consider my friend...

Personally I wouldn't pay a dime for an extended warranty... but that's just me...

I am an "x" service writer from the automotive industry and dealt with those people a lot...

But I have to say... never on motorcycles... so I could be dead wrong... but wouldn't think so...

I have never bought an extended warranty and have never regretted it. I've been buying vehicles (cars and bikes) for 55 years!!

I have the extended warranty on my sporty and I think it's worth it. I've already had the bike in the shop a couple of times that were 100% covered under the warranty. It even included getting it flatbedded from my house to the dealership when it didnt want to start.

I am not a fan of these warrantys. They might be worth it if you are going to use the bike as a daily driver, or do over 10,000 miles a year. If you are financing the bike all your doing is add more finance charges because of the extra cost of the plan. If you are paying cash for the bike then it might be worth it. I have had one problem, a broken choke cable. It was a $9.00 part.

My bike is an 06 883L. I purchased the warranty at the time of the sale. $1300 i think, plus $400 for the tire warranty. Almost $2000!! I just cancelled my extended warranty, but kept the tire warranty ( i live in a new development with ongoing construction..thought it was a good idea to keep it). My reasoning for cancelling the extended warranty is that if I keep my bike for a few more years (definately going to), I am probably gonna void the warranty by having an indie do the 1200 upgrade. And even if I don't do the upgrade, i've already done the stage 1 by the indie and have been told that I've already voided certain parts of the warranty. Hope I made the right decision. Definately saved some coin in the short run.

Rob
