Ive been working on getting a 89 sportster 883 back on the road. I got everything working except when she starts she idles and when you give her gas, she bogs out and dies. She's got a S&S carb on her and I'm wondering if I can just get another carb to put in? If so, what would be my options? Any help is appreciated.

 

Alternative carbs would be a later Harley c/v carb, or a Mikuni. However why not sort out your current carb? A new one will cost ya and is not guaranteed to work properly out of the box. I have an S&S carb on my bike and it runs fine, and so can yours.

If you go to the S&S website you can download an article on tuning your carb, also a video. If your bike has stood for a long time buy a rebuild kit, strip and clean it. You may find it will be fine after that, as well as a darned sight cheaper than buying a new carb!
