Default Holy exhaust reversion Batman!

I put a DK Customs 425 A/C and Rush Short Series system on my '06 883R and I get some reversion. There's some fuel on my air filter after I ride but it's not totally soaked like some peoples' filters. The carb already had a 180 main stock but I did replace the 42 pilot with a 45. Luckily, I'm just about where I want to be with these jets the first time around. The bike starts up good and requires only a little choke when it's cold out. I get smooth accel, decel, and it'll only make a slight pop once or twice every day. Are torque inserts the way to go or is there something better?

Okay, I think it only happens when I shut off the bike. I'd say maybe 50% - 75% of the time it'll diesel when I shut it off and I can see it spit the mixture out of the carb mouth into the filter. Aside from that everything seems to be good. No exhaust popping on accel or decel, no more carb farts, and only minimal choke to start on cold days (maybe 15 seconds and it's only necessary to help it idle fast enough to circulate oil). Acceleration and decel response seem solid; rolling it back slightly from WOT is a smooth transition.

dieseling is caused by a very lean idle mix, high engine head temps, retarded timing.

Hmm, I can't imagine it's running lean at all. I haven't had my setup long enough to check the plugs but it isn't popping or coughing while running cold or warm. According to CV Performance, 1/4 turn past the point where it coughs is the ideal spot for most bikes. Aside from intentionally retarding the timing, is there another way it could happen? The bike only has 4,600 miles on it and the internals are bone stock. I'm currently running Mobil 1 V-Twin 20w-50 and a K&N oil filter.

Okay, I read an old thread where the OP's girlfriend's '02 883 was dieseling and most people were suggesting switching to quality 89 or 91 octane fuel and slightly lowering idle speed.

Okay, I'm going to try replace the spark plugs, run some 89 or 91 from a quality gas station, and slightly lower the idle. My bike idles pretty high after warming so I really think that's the reason. We shall see!

What spark plugs are recommended for our bikes? I've always used NGK's on my metric bikes.

Took care of the issue it seems. Bike was running too rich and idle too high and I knew it was because it drank a lot of fuel and ran boggy... didn't have that snappy oomph when you womp on it WOT.

Brian run a strong dose of Seafoam in the gas tank. The newer instructions on Sea foam now recommends 1 oz per gallon and in the past it was 1.25 oz per gallon.
Run 1.5-2 oz per gallon and run it hard. Should help with your problem.
BTW....ever see the bumper sticker " Don't tell my mother I'm a trucker...she thinks I'm a piano player in a ***** house":-)

lol no I haven't but that's pretty damn funny!

I actually have been running quite a bit of Seafoam in the tank lately. It did help a bit and cleaned up the carb some but it's still not quite dialed in yet.

I thought it stopped dieseling completely but it did it again a little bit just now as I got home and shut it off. It wasn't nearly as bad as it was before so I know I'm getting close. Ultimately I may have somebody with lots of carb experience do the final tune on my bike. It's fun trying to figure it out but after a while I just want it to be done with! I'm just glad I got the jets right the first time around. Listening to people does wonders! I'm running 180 main / 45 pilot @ about 2 turns out on the mixture screw. I haven't yet messed with the slide or needle. Running a DK 425 A/C and Rush Short Series pipes. If you're running a similar setup try those jets and go from there.
