I have this 2007 1200-c and a friend has a 2008 883-C, unless we out and out drag raced you could not tell the difference. His exhaust note is slightly softer, but cruising, doesn't bother the 883 at all. I think that lots of guys here will say that. The 883 is not a small engine, it's just smaller than a 1200. There is a lady in or around Indianapolis with an 883 bike exactly the same color as mine and she has posted here of riding 500 miles and enjoyed it.

The engine & tranny will handle it fine. They are more bullet proof than the Twin Cam engines in the Touring bikes.
The key to long rides on any Sporty is the foot position, handlebar position and a good spring seat or better rear shocks.
Tank is 3.3 gallons which should be good for 120 miles or so, with plenty of cushion for finding a gas station.

Agree with everyone else. The motor is not the problem with long trips its the comfort of the rider. At 65+ the bike will be running at or near 4,000 rpms with stock gearing and it will vibrate hard. It pretty smooth up until that point and is vibey from about 70-90 and then smooths out at around 90.
So take it slow, or change the gearing and then no prob.
