Question US 287 & US 87 in Texas

I'm thinking about taking US 287 north out of Amarillo then US 87 towards New Mexico.

For those that are familiar with these roads, are they in reasonably good shape (no disrespect intended) and allow traffic to move along at a good pace?

TIA!

maybe I'm missing something... (not unusual for me) I thought US 87 goes through south to San Antonio down to Port Lavaca??

and US 287 North goes from Amarillo to Denver??

correct 87 leaves amarillo north and joins 287 then splits in Dumas and 87 goes into NM.
