If you decide on a southern tour in September, the Golden Aspen Rally in Ruidoso is the 14th through 17th. If it were me, I'd make a ride from Albuquerque down to Quemado, then over to Magdalena, Socorro, San Antonio, Carrizozo then to Ruidoso. My wife and I may be able to make the Ruidoso rally this year but haven't decided for sure just yet.

ABQ here also..........

Did not do the Fire and Ice rally, instead went to PineTop AZ for a long weekend with family who rode up from Phoenix.
First time I have been on 117 between Grants and Quemado and I did like the road. Nothing spectacular, except for the Narrows, just a nice little ride. Since time was important this time around, I saved an hour by going that route instead of Soccorro to Quemado. Side note: Don't know if anyone has ever stopped in and ate at/in the Largo Cafe but it was the forth or fifth time we ate there and the food is always great - imho . .grin

September does sound like a good time, I'll wait and see what happens here....

'Till then, Ride Free.

I have made the ride between Grants and Quemado a couple of times and enjoyed it. The sandstone bluffs and lava flows are pretty cool looking.

Last summer, my wife and I rode over to Showlow then down to Globe and back over to Payson before heading to the Fire and Ice Rally in Grants. Pretty neat country, I must say.

Just nosy..... but how is the Pie Town festival? We (wife & I) go through there several times a year on the way to Showlow and Phoenix and we have often wondered about it.

Dumb question but is it about Pies?

I grew up in Datil, and graduated from high school in Magdalena.

In the summer of 1964 I worked in Pie Town with Dan Lee helping install the community water line there.

Regards,

Bill

I don't know what it is about Datil but I truly like that area. It seems so peaceful along with being beatiful.....
