Jimmy Leal Benefit Ride
Jimmy retired from Los Alamos Fire Department recently after about 22 years of service. Shortly afterward, he was diagnosed with stomach cancer. He has endured a long arduous process of radiation treatments, chemotherapy and finally the inevitable surgery which took most all his stomach. Due to all this, he and his wife, Loretta, have found themselves with huge medical bills. A small group of us here at LAFD are putting on a benefit poker run on his behalf, inviting all other firefighters, law enforcement and EMS and/or their significant others around the area to join in to raise money for him.
Jimmy was the guy in our department who was always the first to volunteer his time and talent. If money needed to be collected to help someone out or if flowers needed to be ordered for a deceased family member, you can bet Jimmy was on top of it. Now he is the one that needs help and we are going to do everything we can to help him.
The poker run will begin the morning of August 17, 2009. We will start at Santa fe city fire station #1, 200 Murales Road, ride to Los Alamos, Jemez, Rio Rancho, Albuquerque and back to Santa fe hitting several fire departments in the process. We will end the run at SF Brewing where we will have 2 live bands, door prizes and announce the winner of the poker run and also which fire department raised the most money for Jimmy. The activities at SF Brewing will be an opportunity for folks who can not go on the poker run to participate in the fund raiser as well.
The band playing from 6:00-8:00 PM is Jack Knife from Los Alamos, NM. They play southern rock with many original songs. The band playing from 8:00-10:00 PM is Los Malcriados from Pecos. They play NM spanish and country dance music. There will be a $5.00 cover.
We will be giving away door prizes throughout the evening.
Come enjoy fun, fellowship, awesome scenery, good food and music all in support of our brother Jimmy.
