Hwy. 160 Through Navajo Indian Reservation
Early next month, I'll be riding Hy. 160 through the Navajo Indian Reservation in AZ and CO. Is there plenty of gasoline stops along the road? I'll be taking 160 all the way from Tuba City to Cortez, CO. Any tips from folks who have taken this route will be appreciated.

Monument Valley is out there just North of Kayenta, as is the 4 Corners. If you just stay on 160 there isn't much to see. If it were me, I would take 163 out of Kayenta through Monument Valley, Mexican Hat and Bluff with a slight detour to 4 corners. There's a nice resturant and movie museum at Goulding's Trading Post in Monument Valley that I've always enjoyed.
It is reservation, and there are no requirements to fence in livestock, so you really have to watch for critters on the road.

Thanks Bill. I'll probably take your recommendations. I need to head north eventually anyways (I'll be on my way back to northern Wisconsin). Do you agree with Ultraandroadking that I'll have no problem finding enough gas? I suppose that I sound a little paranoid about gas, but I've been in some remote areas of the west that I've found myself on fumes a couple of times. Traveling solo puts a whole new spin on those types of dilemmas.

RanD, there is gas in Kayenta and there is also gas a little further up the road. It's a nice road, very straight mostly, with nothing but scenery. Very little in the way of houses/farms, etc the whole way. You can use Google Maps satellite view and see the road along with what is there. I agree with Bill, it would be a shame to miss Monument Valley and I would also try to see Valley of the Gods if you had time. Four Corners is pretty cool, been there twice and going back in early June, but it all depends on your route and how much time you have. Moki Dugway is also very nice, which is Hwy 261 just north of Monument Valley, and would also take you up by Natural Bridges Monument and a lower portion of Canyonlands. Lots to see in that part of the country.

Thanks Ultraandroadking,
Between you and Bill, you've added a couple of days to my trip. Time is not a problem for me, so since I'm out there I think I'll take you guys up on your recommendations. I looked at some photos of the Monument Valley area and Holy Smokes....its beautiful!
Thanks again...you've been a big help.

Gas should be no problem. There is gas in Kayenta, Mexican Hat and Bluff, and I think there is at Goulding's in Monunent Valley. There is also gas at the casino in Towoc, as well as in Aneth and Montezuma Creek, Utah. Only issue at all might be finding a few stations closed on Sundays.
