I have a SE 103 motor with an intake and Kerker 2 into 1 exhaust. The bike pulls hard, but I would like it to have a little more power. My first step in the quest for more power was a Power Commander 5 (just installed today). I am thinking about doing a cam upgrade then get a custom tune. I don't know to much about cams for the Harley motor so I am looking for advise. I am looking for more power, but I don't to make the bike unreliable.

Is there any cams I should be looking at?

 

Get woods 777's or 555's.

 

For a stock 103, most folks tend to overcam.although they will work,many big cams need more compression and some headwork to get optimum results.

 

I ran the Wood 555 cam in my 13 RK and had excellent results. I'll probably put the same cam in my Fatty

 

What kind of riding do you do? 1 up or 2? Around town or mostly highway?

 

That should have been the first response to this. There's a ton of cams out there that all do different stuff. If you just cruise around town, maybe you want the power to come on very early in the RPM range. If you're a highwayer, maybe you want that power somewhere around 3500-4000.

Also, like was mentioned, compression is something to take in to account. Some cams are designed to work with higher compression engines..headwork and pistons and such. I've built my engine up and have the Woods TW-555's..i like them a great deal. I feel the power come on around 2700-2800 rpm, and it just pulls all the way through.

The 777's will work, but IIRC they're designed for 10.5:1 compression bikes. The power with them also comes on a little later than the 555's.

There's also the TW-222, TW-888's, all sorts of Andrews cams, S&S, and others. There's too many to choose from.

So..answer the first question.. how do you ride?

 

The milder the cam the happier you are likely to be with an otherwise stock engine. There are a ridiculous number to choose from. Most of the time, like 99.9%, you are riding in the 2500 to 4000 rpm range so I would look at a cam that makes power in that range. If the bike were mine I would look at the SE 255 or Andrews 48. The Woods 222 would also be a good choice but I have found Woods cams to be fairly noisy.

 

I see your in area where the snow flies. Do yourself a HUGE favor, pull the heads this winter and get some head work done. Talk a tuner and get your heads and cam done to match. It's he only way to go.

 

Go to the Andrews website and read up on cams. I picked the 48H for my mostly stock 96 inch motor. I think the 57 is made for stock 103 motors. (no head work or increased compression) I have been very happy with the 48H cams. You can find them reasonably priced from various suppliers....about $100 cheaper than Woods...

 

When I go for a "ride" it is on windy country roads as much as possible. I try to avoid highways unless it is to or from where we went riding. My wife comes with me as much as possible, but with 2 small kids we can't always both get away.
