Your dealer should have a demo shield that is marked at various heights. You can take it and sit on your bike to find out what height you like.

I'm one of those weirdos that enjoys freeway riding so I like to look 2" under the top so it blocks bugs and small stones. Sometimes in the city I'll remove it all together.
