They do more than oil change my @#$^! When my bike was new they charged me "to make sure everything is OK", after first 15 miles my pants were oiled (loose rocker cover bolts), the front tire was severely under-inflated, headlight was lighting up the top of trees, etc. I could carry on, but methinks you got the picture?

Spend the $60 or so to get the service manual for your year of bike, it is definetely worth it. There is also a site that has a good tuitorial on "how-to's" http://www.dudeworld.com.au/HOWTO.ENGINE.HTML lots of good infomation there, and he does it step by step.
You are going to need a few tools probably;
Torque wrench, foot lbs and inch lbs
The Harley oil filter wrench
The Harley funnel for removing the oil filter and not making a mess
The Harley funnel for adding fluid back into the side cover
A motorcycle lift or jack would be very beneficial (but not an absolute necessity)
A set of torx-wrenches

Might be a couple items I am missing, but I am also going off of memory and if I remember correctly the guy a dude-world tells you exactly everything you will need and even improvises on a few of the "Harley Tools".
My dealer told me that me doing the 1k service would not affect my warranty at all, just save the receipts like others have mentioned.

 

Most of you guys are being a lot more polite than when I asked the same question a couple years ago. Seemed as though there were quite a few on here chiming in to "What a moron I was for wanting to do it myself" or the "You spent thousands on a bike and now you are skimping on a few hundred bucks".
Personally I think the average guy who has grown-up doing his own repairs, is capable with a wrench, knows how to find torque specs, understands sequence, pays attention to the details and takes his time is very capable of doing the 1k service. Most likely will do a better job than most of the dealers to boot! JMHO....

Since you will be saving tons doing it yourself, then do a favor for you and your bike and learn about Amsoil. It's gonna cost you about $100 for all three holes but I honestly believe their synthetic fluids are superior!
go to www.amsoil.com and plug in your zip code to find a local dealer. Get to know the guy and you might be surprised by the deals and discounts he will give you. If he is a good dealer he will also have a full line of their products.

 

I know an amsoil guy personally good friend of mine. When should I make the switch first oil change or second one? I've been running amsoil in my dirt bikes and truck no issues at all.

 

I put Amsoil in all 3 holes, at the 1K service interval.

 

I do pay the wholesale fee and order from Amsoil directly. I order a variety of oils in one order, for my bike, for my cars, etc. It pays off big time.

 

Thought most dealers 1000 Mile was included with purchase of bike.

 

Just a scam to gouge more $$ from you imo. When was the last time you took a new car in for 1000 mile service.

Owning a bike or car is expensive enough as it is and unless you have money to burn it's best to learn how to do basic ongoing maintenance and service yourself.
