Buy a windshield that is...
I have been shopping for a windshield to use on long trips, but I just can't. Not to offend anyone that runs a shield on their FB. I just don't prefer the look. I am sure about 300 miles in, I will wish otherwise, but I would much rather spend the cash on something I want. I do have a driver back rest on my stock seat, and will probably get the seat modified for comfort. That will make the trip a little easier.
My buddies who ride baggers are on me to get one, but 90% of my riding is local anyway, so it's just the 10% that I need to worry about.

I prefer not to use my windshield but there are times when I'm thankful that I have it! [sm=smiley20.gif]
It's nice to relax going down the highway at 80 mph while whistling your favorite tune. Having the windshield has made it bearable to cruise around the New England foliage comfortably inNovember & beyond.
I went with detachables for the windshield, bags and back rest.
All were bought on Ebay........cheep!
You can get a windshield on Ebay for under $100. bucks and I think it's well worth it even if you only use it a few times a year...............like me.

In fact, I've grown very fond of 'Spring bugs', very tasty.
And I actually like the wind..
Come to think about it, I haven't worn a helmet in all those years either....
As they say; "different strokes for different folks"...

Eating bugs doens't change my mind, been there, done that. However, if I could find one relatively cheap, then I woud reconsider. It's not that I don't want one when going on trips, it's just I don't want to spend $300 buck for something I will use only occasionally.
