A few years ago, when I installed the Wild 1 16" apes on Reaper, I wired up an ignition switched coaxial 12vdc port to power my Zumo 660, and then my 590. Those units had the 12 vdc->5vdc converter built into the mount. Now, I have a Zumo XT, and it has an external power converter inline in the power cable. In order to use the port, and not have a giant roll of cable to hang somewhere, I had to figure out another option. So, I bought a second power cable (keeping the original in case I need to revert or want to use the XT on another bike), a small waterproof 12vdc->5vdc converter, and fabbed up a little aluminum plate to be able to mount the converter on the back of the XT mount. Happy to report that it works as expected. Tomorrow, I'm planning a full day of riding. I'll be covering over 350 miles, so I'll be able to give it a good real world test.

I'm thinking of painting the converter black, but I'm not sure that won't impair the heat sink.

Here are a couple of pics.

Cheers!

In the process of my 20K service I buggered two primary cover bolts, damn T27's! A little drilling and lightly tapping a T30 into the screw head did the trick and they came out. They have been replaced with chrome socket head cap screws for easier removal in the future.
I also switched sparkplug cables to snazzy, red and black ones.

Default She's a little broken

On 8/22 it was a nice, clear evening. Perfect for a sunset ride. So that's what I did. I rode about 45 mins before deciding to head back home. It was about 8:30 pm when I pulled up to a red light in a dedicated left turn lane, first on the line and no cars behind me yet. The lights change and I have a flashing yellow arrow, so I'm waiting for oncoming traffic to pass. I had a bandanna over my face which was causing my glasses to fog up. As I reach up and pull my glasses down a little so I can see...BAM! Some A$$hat rear ends me! Fortunately I had just took my hands off the handlebars or it could have been a lot worse. He wasn't going fast at all, was probably stopping while looking at his phone, who knows. Anyways, it knocked the bike right out from under me, and then the car bumped me making me stumble forward into the bike, which was still upright, causing a nasty burn on my calf (had shorts on). She rolled another 4 ft or so and fell on her right side. I stumbled some more before catching myself, but I never hit the ground. I spun right around and yelled some choice words at the driver. He never said a word, just drove off. F**ker. And not one of the 6 or so cars that was in that intersection when it happened stayed or offered assistance. People suck. So my Insurance had to pay for it. But it's all good because I'm ok and she will be getting a makeover. Instead of buying the $1200 anniversary fender from HD, I'm getting a primed one and a custom paint job. I will be doing everything but the paint and this is going to be the most wrenching I've ever done her. Oh, so here's all that's damaged--- rear fender of course, tail light, plate mount, signal, scratched exhaust, right floorboard and mounting bracket, lindby bar (so glad i put this on), mirror, brake hand lever, and lost the left axle nut cover. So now I have collected from the ins co and am ready to start ordering parts!! I'm excited, but also sad because there won't be any riding for the next month or so.

That really sucks! I'm glad you didn't hurt and that bike damage is minimal/insured.
There are definitely too many ******* cagers on the road!

The black horn cover bracket and black nut was delivered this week, and I ditched the chrome parts. The left side of the bike looks way better: it looks the horn is just kind of floating between the cylinders.

Thought about my next inexpensive DIY? Powder coat the struts to blend in with that HD 'burnt leather' paint?
Since I cammed it, and upgraded the oil pump been enjoying it, Oh yeah, I open it up occasionally but mostly putt.
70 mph is 2500 rpm now, few more than stock. Triple digits quickly. These scoots are not crotch rockets, remember that folks.
How quick can HD get you get to 115 is key. I need faster I'd go S&S for a twin that kicked butt, or a crotch rocket I needed 160...*laffs
