Default K&N stock air filter replacement.

I need some help here please Gents:

I am looking to do a Stage 1, but retain the stock air filter housing - maybe I'm weird, but I like the classic Harley shape.

Anyway, I "believe" the K&N part number is HD-1499.

Can anyone confirm this please?

Also, is that all I need, just the filter? No extra backplate?

Any assistance appreciated!

That is just a replacement filter element. A stage 1 intake is actually a new backing plate and filter. This removes the stock plastic airbox surround that is behind the cover and replaces it with a smaller metal plate.

OK, thanks. If you don't mind bearing with me here, what is the functional difference between a Stage 1 as you describe and the straightforward replacement that I am considering?

Will the Stage 1 provide an even higher airflow somehow?

Many thanks,
G.

Yes, more airflow because the backing plate does not form a box, rather just a mount for the filter.

So, does the DK Stage 1 that you link sit under the stock cover, which is what I want to retain?

The link 24v provided is a back plate and the filter, which is what is underneath your cover, yes.

24v, you're too fast...or I'm too slow.

I must confess that I am getting confused here - it's been a long day.

My aim is/was to up the airflow and alter the existing pipes(spike, cut, or rewind the existing baffles for a tad more flow and better sound) and tune if required.

Now DK want $70 just to post me the 18-803! That's robbery so they can keep it.

I've looked on ebay and there are several sellers with the Arlen Ness 18-803, but they list it as being for various Sportsters and say it's not Breakout compatible.

Are these sellers wrong, or does the 18-803 relate just to the filter and they may all have different backplates?

Am I making sense?
