Don't know about the softail but on my sportster with the drop in from progressive thats how it works. If you find that you went to far you can always put the 1" part you cut off back in.

Do you guys just take the forks apart, cut the spacer, put it back together. then if you don't like it, take everything apart again & repeat as required? are you draining the oil each time?

Progressives drop in system its just that. Jack the bike up take off fork caps pull old springs out , drop in new springs and spacer ( trimmed to length for desired ride height) put the caps back on. Easy peasy

Softail is a little different set up than the sporster forks. we gotta dissasemble the entire fork, unless someone knows a different way to approach it.

The forks do not have to be disassembled just slid down in the trees to get the springs out. Or you can remove the upper tree. But the fork does not have to come apart.

Cutting and shortening the fork spring spacers will lower the bike however it will also decrease the preload on the springs. If you remove an excessive amount of preload you may find the front suspension very soft and spongy. This can sometimes be compensated for by increasing the fork fluid volume, changing to a heavier fluid, or a combination of both. You're going to have to experiment to find the sweet spot.

Note: An over excessive amount of fluid in the forks can cause the seals to blow.
