Quick math will tell you whether the "Service Plan" would be a good deal for you. Your buddy at the dealership seemed to be steering you in the right direction. Harley's Extended Warranty is a whole different plan. IF you're planning to keep your bike for a few years, this could be good protection for you as it doesn't take much to go wrong and have it add up to $1000, or more. You can buy up to another 5 years, if you buy it while still under the manufacturer's warranty (a total of 7 years). It can be re-newed at the end of the contract, if you have less than 75K on the odometer. That could be a total of 12 years of protection. And you can cancel it at any time & get a refund. Finally, IF you go with an extended warranty, call Jim Palmer at Kutter H-D in Janesville, WI. If your state is like FL, and considers extended warranties as an insurance plan (non-negotiable), he may be able to save you hundreds of dollars.

I'm not a fan of the service plan unless you take the bike the dealership for every service. I like to do my own 3 hole fluid changes, but don't have the extra room in the garage to do major repairs. I take the bike to the dealer for the 10K, 20K, ect inspection only to make a warranty claim easier.
