I hear you on the weird feel. On high speed leans its a little weird. A lot of people said low speed maneuvers would be difficult.... ive had no problem actually... its been easier with apes.

I got about a 5 hour ride in yesterday. With the apes and re padded seat there was no more tailbone or shoulder pain. Very comfortable and the bike handles great.

They look great!..Had 16" apes on a RKC and a Street Bob.Now have a Heritage.Thinking apes again.Usually the first thing I change is the seat and handle bars.But the stock seat and handlebars on this 2013 HSC are just so damn comfortable.
Anyway....I think your bike looks awesome!!
