Default Looking at a softail need advice

New to the forums currently have a 88 sporty but want to move up to a soft tail, right now I am looking at a 1990 softail custom with 11,xxx miles bike is all stock and its in pretty nice shape really needs to be polished out has oxidation on it from sitting , it has been sitting in a garage for the past 3 or 4 years it does run but needs carb work and tires and probably some other little things if I get the bike I will be doing all the work so that doesn't scare me. Best I can get the bike for is 5100 is this bike worth the money or should I look for something newer? Do the early softails and evo motors have any serious issues to look out for ? Any help, would be great thanks

Evo's are damn near bullet proof, change the fluids and ride them. 5100 seems a little steep though. My buddy just picked up an 02 night train with 20k on it for $6000. Offer him $4500.00 if it runs good I'd buy it.

I'd agree with the 4500. He obviously doesn't care too much for it if it has been sitting for that long without a little TLC.

I would think $5100 would be a very good price. I have seen that year go for up to $2000 more with way more miles. You would love the bike. Hard to beat an EVO Softail. I bought my 99 Custom 4 years ago for $7100, and I thought I stole it. Many were going for $9000+. I guess it all depends on what kind of shape its in and how much you will have to put in it.

Thumbs up

Would be nice if tires were good at 5100. I still ride a 92 fxstc for last 13 years, no problems with evo or bike.
Picked up a 98 electraglide last year with 7000 miles like new at a good price. Being the last years of the evo was the deal maker.
As stated earilier BULLETPROOF

I personally dont like that price. its riding season and people are buyin. Its a buyers market and you can get something newer if you want. a newer evo. You have a lot more options. If your hearts set then take it.

A few $$ high, but not to far off the mark. EVO's are great. FYI - Cylinders tend to leak at the base. Not a problem until it gets real bad.

Two things on EVO's. Use dino oil and warm it up a little before you ride it hard. Mine has 39,000 miles on it with no leaks.

Chrome! Jesus what so these guys buy them for 6400 miles isn't even broke in yet. 6500-7k max is what I'd pay.
