Default Power commander confusion

I got a used power commander PCIII USB from an outstanding forum member to install on my 05 springer classic. I did the install per fuel moto's instructions and hooked up the laptop to it. First thing I wanted to do is check the firmware version but noticed the software wanted me to plug in the power adapter to the PCIII. I don't have one. Doh! Does anyone know if this is even needed if the PCIII is fully installed on my HD? Will the accessories power it up enough without ordering an adapter to install new firmware and upload my maps?

Asking cause my son took the laptop and can't try it myself right now.

From my memory you only need the power adapter to run the unit when it is not hooked up to the bike. I think it is run by 9vt battery off the bike.
