Default Hyd Tensioner Upgrade Parts List

I'm planning to do the hydraulic tensioner/oil pump upgrade in the Spring. Did some searching but need confirmation on the parts list. I have a 2004 softail, 95" kit, Andrews 26 cams and SE adjustable pushrods. Here's what I think I need:

Hyd Cam Tensioner upgrade kit 25284-11
Spacer Kit 25285-08
Torrington Inner Cam Bearings B148
Drive Gear Retension Kit 25533-99A
Cam Cover Gasket

Does that cover it? Thanks

why not go to the geared cam drive and not have to mess with it ever again?

Might as well do new cams at the same time and they usually come with the new outer bearings. I can't see taking it all apart and not doing a different cam. Depending on how you do this you will need o rings for the push rods and if you do adjustable pushrods different push rod tubes.

Are you pulling the rocker covers etc and reusing the stock pushrods?

As i said in the original post, I already have Andrews 26 cams and SE adjustable pushrods. Not looking to replace the cams, just put in the hyd tensioners.

Are the inner and outer bearings the same? Can anyone confirm the part numbers? Thanks

Shineybike,

I just finished the Hyd Tensioner upgrade on my 03 earlier this month. Your parts list is Spot-On with the exception of 1 item. Delete the Cam Cover Gasket, and add to your list a Cam Service Kit #17045-99D which will include amoung other items the Outer Bearings, Exhaust Gaskets, and Cam Cover Gasket.

Notes:

1. The SE HYD Upgrade Kit will replace your Crank and Cam Sprockets enabling the use of a Roller Chain included in the kit. You will retain your original inner (secondary) cam chain.

2. Mark the secondary cam chain so that after reassembly it travels in the same direction.

3. When pressing-in the outer cam bearings into the cam plate, ensure that the lettering on the bearings is facing against the press head.

4. The Crank and Cam Sprockets must be aligned within .010 thus the need for the spacer kit.

5. Important, insure that you replace and properly install a new oil pump O-Ring (included in the service kit) on the suctions side of the pump.

6. The Cam Service Kit includes parts for all Twin Cams so don't be alarmed when you find left over parts.

7. Use plenty of Assembly Lube.

Hyd Cam Tensioner upgrade kit 25284-11

This kit does not replace the inner (secondary) cam chain with a roller style. Retaining the stock inner Morse link chain will still cause problems, hydraulic or not.

My Andrews cams are the 26A's, part no. DS-199179. I'm confused about something. Do I need outer bearings or do the outer cam ends just ride in the new cam plate? Can the inner chain be replaced?

I'm not sure about the outer bearings to answer your question.

I am assuming you have a TC88? If so, your inner and outer cam bearing journals are .875". THe SE Hyd plate up grade retains the same outer bearing journal diameter.

If you want to replace the inner chain as well, you'll need to ditch the idea of the SE Hyd plate upgrade.

You'll want to get the parts for an 07+ Softail, and conversion cams. The 07+ has an outer cam bearing journal of 1". Conversion cams have a .875" inner race and a 1" outer race.

I know this is more information that you've asked for, but in my opinion, the SE kit isn't a good option. It was designed to retain stock cams and as a result, it's poorly designed.

Yes, You need New Outer Cam Bearings. They are included in the Harley Cam Service Kit #17045-99D. The outer cam bearings must be pressed into the Cam Plate.

You will hear many say that this upgrade is inferior due to the retention of the stock secondary cam chain. Although true, I completely disagree. The SE Hyd kit accomplishes three important things:

1. Less pressure is applied to the chains by the tensioners at lower RPS (When at Idle) due to lower oil pressure at idle, therefore lengthening the life of the tensioners themselves. Spring loaded tensioners have consent pressure.

2. Hyd tensioners can be replaced without removing the cams from the cam plate.

3. Overall oil pressure is increased due to the higher output oil pump and redesigned oil passages in the cam plate.

After performing this up-grade, my oil pressure increased and my overall operating temperature decreased. Even when my bike is stuck in traffic on a hot day I have 18 psi of oil pressure at idle. Prior to the up grade, my oil pressure could drop to as low as 4 psi at idle. For me, this up-grade was beneficial and worth the cost. Although not perfect, it is superior to the stock spring loaded tensioner system.
