FatBoy in a short bed (here comes the jokes)

8'X4'X3/4" plywood to protect bed and tailgate; diagnal load; you can pick the bike up by laying it over on the kick stand or just pick it up and have a buddy slide a block under rear of bike as far back as can to take any load off tailgate. Scrap wood for wheel chocks on back to keep it where you want it. I've hauled bikes thousands of mile this way and never had a tearup. The plywood really saves the tailgate on loading cause the new PU's are pretty cheesy on metal.

that pretty much the route i'm going... i did the 3/4 plywood.. actually cut it to 7 long...it's only 7'6" to the end of the gate and the back wheel sits at about 6'4
where the back wheel sits doesn't really matter though cuz i got a little trick up my sleeve... this bike has air-ride in the rear. so what i did was i measured to where the rear of the frame is and i screwed down 2 pieces of 2x8 with a gap in between so i can load the bike and i figured out that a 4x4 with a scrap of 1/2 plyood scrwewed to it will slide under the rear of the frame when the bike is in place (i showed the blocks sitting in place for the picture)
... then i let the air out of the rear and the frame rests on the wood... then i can "drop" the rear suspension which in turn raises the rear wheel slighlty and just about takes all of the weight off the rear wheel
the blocks of wood that the frame is resting on are just about at the end of the bed..not the tailgate...

uhaul rents a VERY nice 5x9 open trailer..that seems as if it were made for a bike..it has a drop ramp, a notch for the front wheel, and plenty of tie downs. I acutally rented it a saturday to get bike to my house from about haour and half away... i worked well... BUT..here in Jersy it rents for $24.95 / day + $8 insurance if you choose... that is all based on me draggin the empty trailer back to jersey.. it would be about $170 rental (2 days out to Colrado..stay 3 days..2 days back)..if i rened that same trailer and dopped it off in Colorado as a 1 way rental, it would be about $350....
My other issue is that the trailer weighs 1,200 pounds empty..and we all know added wieght = less gas mileage...
