I have a 2008 FXSTC and, for the last 1000 mjiles or so (30,000 on bike), I hear a 'whirring' sound sometimes right behind the derby cover with the clutch lever pulled in. Anyone had similar?
Sounds like your noise is clutch related. I would troubleshoot by:
1. Inspecting your Primary Chain Tension.
2. Perform a proper Clutch Adjustment.
3. Insuring you have the proper Primary Fluid Level.

Well, I would point at you, but my coffee cup finger still won't straighten out. Thanks for your input.
Have an update for y'all - this loud "whirring" noise was evident if I pulled in the clutch, put it in first, took it out first, and released clutch handle. Got the bike back today with a replaced main drive gear, inner primary bearing, new clutch assembly because of a missing tooth on clutch hub. Also, the tech found bad connections and grounding in the starter and replaced that, too. $2200 repair all covered under extended warranty - YAY!
I hear the same "whirring" noise on mine when I am down shifting coming to a stop. I hope mine is not a 2200 problem cause mine is an 06 and no warranty. I only have about 6300 miles on my bike. About 3k on the motor and 2k on the SE 6 speed I put in it.
On my Rocker, it turned out to be my primary tensioner saying goodbye...followed soon by the primary chain trying to tear thru the case...I put on a new reved part se tensioner and luckily no other damage than a nice riding day interrupted by a trailer ride...Full speed ahead!!
sorry guys...forgot I put in a response...my short term memory is DOA...
