I know this is mis-posted but i cruise with the softies and I know you folks have some good info, please help a brother out!
Ever since I got my fatboy my father has been looking to get rid of his little intruder 800 and get on a harley - the problem is he doesnt have the funds...
I have been looking for a bike I can buy for him, or trade something i have to get a bike for him.
I found this 1986 FXR and the guy is asking $4800 but after speaking with him, I am pretty sure he is willing to trade me straight up for a Kawasaki 4 wheeler I have.
My question is, What do I need to know about this bike before pulling the trigger and making the deal happen? Was there anything particularily bad with these bikes? What should I look for when i go to the sellers house tonight to physically inspect? Known problems? Known repairs? Systematic issues? (( I just dont want to get someone elses problem, if you know what i mean)) are their aftermarket parts available like there is for my bike? etc..
I value my 4 wheeler at approx 3200-3600... so if the bike is worth even 3500-4000, I am not worried about the trade value dollars. As far as mechanics, the old man has been wrenching for 30 years and is pretty comfortable doing most repairs if needed, he is an old school "give me a holly 650 or a quadrajet over that F.I. stuff anyday of the week" type of guy...
Thanks all!

Nice looking bike,I had a 92 FXR for quite a few years, apart from a broken return spring in the gearbox never had a problem with it, as has been said many times Evo engines are said to be near bullet proof, I think some people have had trouble with cylinder gaskets leaking at the base but as I recall not much else, as for spares I wouldn't know as I live in the UK, but I should think there's plenty about at Indy workshops main dealerships won't want to know.

When I had by Dyna and visited that side of the forum, many of the guys on the Dyna side considered the FXR to be the best Harley ever built.
The price does sound a little high from what I remember on the Dyna side, but if it's clean and he's willing to trade, go for it. Especially if you're old man is mechanically inclined.
And by the way, that's a very cool thing you are doing by getting rid of your stuff so that he can have fun too.
