AusMongrel, I know my opinion is not very popular on here when it comes to this subject but you asked for opinions so here is mine. I don't think anything out there looks as well as the 16's do on our big cruiser type bikes. I see some VERY sweet rides on this site with the larger skinnier wheels and tires, in fact, some awesome looking bikes but for me personally it's 16's and only 16's. I don't like it either because with the 16's my choices are very limited when it comes to custom wheel choices compared to all the other wheel sizes that are out there. So, let the badgering on me begin because of my thoughts and comments on this tire and wheel subject.
That's why I went 18 x 130 up front. Partly because of the roads around there, but mostly because I want just a bit more meat up front than you get with a 21". Not saying I wouldn't go there in the future, but for now I feel it's the perfect compromise.

What brand and size 18 are you running on your 04? Any adjustments for fitment (reversing bolts etc...)?
Thanks
Hey bro, i am running 18 x 4.25 Performance Machine Hooligan with a 150/60/18 Metz on the rear. I didn't have to do any mods on mine at all, but that is the widest you can go on it. I tried a 160/60/18 and it rubbed real bad so i had go down to a 150.
I used to have a 21 on the front, ran it for about 1.5 years.. I then scored a deal on a real nice 19" billet wheel and put a 130 tire on it and wow, the bike really handled better at all speeds.. The bike no longer wanted to wander in the freeway grooves and just felt more stable all around.. So I am running a 150 on the rear and a 130 up front and love the way it rides and handles..
I am totally over big skinny front wheels, even if some think they look better..

Runnin a 18/160 rear on a 4.25 rim, no problems. Did have to center the fender and trim one strut bolt on each side that sticks into the fender well, no big deal.
21's look good in pics, primarily side views. In person, too skinnie looking imo.
I have a 21" 100 spoke on the front of my 04 Night Train and after riding that then riding a buddy of mines 05 Fat Boy with the stock front wheel the difference in handling was very noticable. Im saying I noticed the difference not that either was any better.
