As said, the service manual lays out the procedure step by step. It is not hard at all. Take your time and don't get in a rush. Maybe a 2 beer job.

Salt(calcium chloride) will instantly pit the forks. Also bug juice, stone pecks and oceon salt. Waranty will not cover replacement. I have had Harleys that never pitted and one that did. May be a supplier difference.

yup this sucks spend money on a HD and this is what u get

In all honesty, salt will do this to almost anything metal. Sometimes not, but most times it will. Just be diligent about whipping down the bike after rides to get the salt off. Same reason you see people with nice boats with lots of chrome on them whipping them off and washing them. It will eventually pit anything.

I hear you man. Take those suckers off and get them powder coated black or painted. It will look awesome anyway.
